How to use Cloudflare with your Hostingbarn domain and web hosting

Phase 1: Add Your Domain to Cloudflare

  1. Create/Log in to Cloudflare: Go to Cloudflare.com and sign up or log in.

  2. Add Site: Click the Add a Site button. Enter your naked domain (e.g., example.com)—do not include www or https.

  3. Select a Plan: Scroll down to find the Free plan (unless you need advanced enterprise features). Click Continue.

  4. Scan DNS Records: Cloudflare will automatically scan your cPanel server for existing DNS records ($A$, $MX$, $CNAME$, etc.).

    • Pro Tip: Open your cPanel > Zone Editor in another tab. Compare the records Cloudflare found with the ones in cPanel to ensure nothing was missed.

  5. Review Proxy Status: * Orange Cloud (Proxied): Traffic goes through Cloudflare (Security + CDN).

    • Grey Cloud (DNS Only): Traffic goes directly to your server. Use this for records like mail or ftp to avoid connection issues.

  6. Continue: Once you’ve verified the records, click Continue.

Phase 2: Update Your Nameservers (DNS Update)

Cloudflare will now provide you with two unique nameservers. They usually look like tracey.ns.cloudflare.com and will.ns.cloudflare.com. To activate Cloudflare, you must tell your Domain Registrar to use these instead of your host’s nameservers.

  1. Identify your Registrar: This is where you bought the domain (e.g., HostingBarn).

  2. Locate DNS Management: Log in to your Registrar and find the Nameservers or DNS Management section for your domain. This is done in your client area, under "Domains"

  3. Change to Custom DNS: Select the option for "Custom DNS" or "Use my own nameservers."

  4. Paste Cloudflare Nameservers: Remove the old nameservers (usually provided by your hosting company) and paste the two provided by Cloudflare.

  5. Save Changes: Hit save.

Note on Propagation: DNS changes are not instant. It can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 24 hours for the new nameservers to update globally.

Phase 3: Finalize cPanel Settings

Once the nameservers are updated, you need to ensure your cPanel doesn't "fight" with Cloudflare regarding SSL.

  • Set SSL/TLS Mode: In the Cloudflare dashboard, go to SSL/TLS.

    • If you have a valid SSL on cPanel, set this to Full (Strict).

    • If you don't have an SSL on cPanel yet, set it to Flexible (though Full is much more secure).

  • Check for Conflicts: Since Cloudflare is now handling the "front door," you no longer need to edit DNS inside cPanel's Zone Editor. Any future changes (like adding a subdomain) must be done in the Cloudflare DNS tab.
